Echeveria "Melaco" variegated – Origin: South Korea

The Echeveria "Melaco" variegated, created by Renee O’Connell, is a very recognizable selection due to its dark base color —almost chocolate— combined with an irregular variegation that introduces cream, yellow, and green tones, generating a very marked contrast on the rosette.

The Echeveria "Melaco" variegated maintains a compact habit, with slightly concave fleshy leaves that end in a soft point, forming dense rosettes that, with good lighting, further intensify the characteristic burgundy and black tones of the Melaco. The variegation can vary between leaves and even within the same leaf, providing visual dynamism and strong personality to each specimen.

Variegated Echeveria: cultivation and care

Variegated echeverias develop a lower photosynthetic capacity than their completely green counterparts, which directly affects their growth rate, sensitivity to excess sunlight, and tolerance to watering.

  • 🌞 A lot of filtered light and soft exposure
  • 💧 Water only with the substrate completely dry
  • 🔥 Avoid extreme heat and prolonged humidity
  • 🌱 Slower growth than non-variegated echeverias

Environmental stability, good ventilation, and avoiding sudden changes in location help maintain more compact rosettes and a more stable variegation over time.

During intense summer, they may partially slow down their growth, especially in warm climates. In these phases, controlling excess moisture is much more important than increasing the frequency of watering.
