Echeveria "Hanakaida" variegated – Origin: Asia
The Echeveria “Hanakaida” variegated is a Japanese hybrid created by Mr. Yokomori, characterized by its open habit and elongated, slightly curved leaves that form a less compact rosette with a greater sense of movement. Its structure resembles modern hybrids with more dynamic lines, where each leaf is arranged in a somewhat looser manner, allowing for a better appreciation of the color transitions. The variegated version, known as ‘Syoufuku-nishiki’, maintains this morphological base but adds a marked extra complexity in visual appeal.
The Echeveria “Hanakaida” variegated stands out for its intense combination of deep reds, greens, and irregularly appearing variegated light areas on the leaves. With good light exposure, the reds intensify to become very dark, creating a strong contrast with the greener or yellowish centers. This color mix, along with its more open and expressive shape, makes it a very striking piece among variegated succulents, especially interesting for collectors looking for Japanese hybrids with their own character.

Variegated Echeveria : cultivation and care
Variegated echeverias develop a lower photosynthetic capacity than their completely green counterparts, which directly affects their growth rate, sensitivity to excess sunlight, and tolerance to watering.
- 🌞 A lot of filtered light and soft exposure
- 💧 Water only with the substrate completely dry
- 🔥 Avoid extreme heat and prolonged humidity
- 🌱 Slower growth than non-variegated echeverias
Environmental stability, good ventilation, and avoiding sudden location changes help maintain more compact rosettes and a more stable variegation over time.
During intense summer, they may partially slow down their growth, especially in warm climates. In these phases, controlling excess moisture is much more important than increasing the frequency of watering.
