Qué makes variegated succulents special
Variegation is the result of a genetic mutation that alters the production of chlorophyll in certain areas of the leaf. This causes color contrasts that can range from whites and creams to pink or yellow tones.
Each specimen is unique, even within the same variety. Some plants have defined stripes, others irregular spots or soft gradients. This unrepeatable character is one of the reasons why variegated succulents are so valued in collecting.
Among the most valued genera are Echeveria, Aeonium, and other groups that, in their variegated version, reach a level of ornamental quality far superior to their green forms.
General care
Although many people believe they are difficult, their cultivation is simple if their natural cycles are respected. The key is to observe the plant and adapt the care to its growth rhythm. Its active period usually concentrates between autumn and spring, varying according to species and climate. During this stage, they develop new leaves and maintain their colors with greater intensity. The substrate is fundamental. These plants require very draining mixes that prevent moisture accumulation. A balanced combination may include: 50% universal substrate 25% volcanic gravel 25% pumice This mix promotes aeration and reduces the risk of root rot. Light and temperature Intense light is key to maintaining colors, although always filtered. Strong direct sunlight can cause burns on the lighter areas of the leaf.
The ideal is to provide soft morning sun or late afternoon sun. During heat waves, it is advisable to protect them during the central hours.
Regarding temperature, they tolerate moderate climates well, although it is advisable to protect them below 5 °C.
Watering and fertilization
Watering should be moderate, allowing the substrate to dry completely between applications. During active growth, watering every two or three weeks is usually sufficient.
Fertilization should be light, with low concentration fertilizers applied only during growth phases.
